Meiro Stamm
Composer/Producer/Musician
Specialized in: TV Series, Film
Styles: Various
Plays: Guitars, Keys
Meiro Stamm is best known as a composer with the ability to fuse classical, contemporary and world elements into striking and memorable music. His film, television and stage credits run the gamut from children's programming and animation to action and mystery films to classical drama.
Beginning his career as a guitarist, Meiro performed both as a solo artist and in various groups on the classical and electric guitar. Meiro developed an interest in music from around the world and composition rather than performance soon became his primary focus. He studied counterpoint and music theory with Art Levine as well as Lucknow tabla with Ritesh Das of the Toronto Tabla Ensemble. Stamm was also a member of Gamelan Toronto for three years, studying and performing Javanese gamelan music with the group.
Through his varied musical background, Meiro developed what he calls "the GeoHarmonic Concept". In his own words, "I have always been fascinated by similarities in art from different time periods and cultures. It's amazing to see how different artists, separated by thousands of miles and hundreds of years, often give expression to the same idea; a single concept bringing forth a multitude of outward forms. I want to create music that does the same thing in reverse - takes many forms of outward expression and points to the inspiration within."
In 1997 Stamm released is debut album titled In a Beginning... on his GeoHarmonic label. Described as "serious high-art" by Geoff Chapman of the Toronto Star, In a Beginning... has received international airplay and critical acclaim.
Since then, Meiro has produced albums for award-winning Canadian poet Carla Hartsfield and Crescendo/BMG recording artist Bageshree Vaze. He has also scored numerous television, film and stage productions and was nominated for a Gemini Award in 2005. Please see the "Projects" page of this website for further details.
Stamm is a member of the Guild of Canadian Film Composers (GCFC) and has served on its Board of Directors since 2002. He is currently Vice-President of the GCFC.
